‘Rickshaw’ marks the very beginning of my journey as an artist. Having enlisted my family and friends to help me develop this project, I set about constructing the language of my portraiture work. In this series, I pushed aside the social norms of my culture and had my subjects take on roles of the opposite sex.

At first the exercise was met with apprehension but it soon became apparent that by assigning them with typical gender roles I helped them assume a different persona, at times enhancing their discomfort and at times empowering them like never before. This was especially true for the women. It has become one of my most important works not only creatively but also as part of a social commentary on gender-defined roles.
